Forgotten and marginalized areas are not static. They carry histories, host new forms of life and social interaction, and challenge the way we perceive the city. In Latent Grounds we explored and intertwined the multiple narratives of Can Tunis, honoring their diversity and uncovering their layers.
Can Tunis stands as a place of displaced memories, a neighborhood crossed by port workers, the last residents of a solitary housing block, and people living on the margins. Within this context lies the Municipal Material Storage, an old quarry in Morrot where the City Council salvages stone from demolition sites — abandoned yet full of latency and potential.
Through four acts, we crossed Can Tunis to reach this storage site, inviting participants into a speculative exploration of its memory and materiality and transforming its spaces into sites of experimentation and storytelling. During the experience, we handed out leaflets for participants to register ideas, sensations, and intuitions evoked in each act. We also produced and screened short videos that unveiled some of the site’s historical layers, including the story of Can Tunis and the materials depot. Our full investigation was displayed on a 14-meter-long scroll created specifically for the event.
This project is part of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 proposal, which aims to collectively rehearse new forms of care and coexistence on a wounded planet in transition.
